With thanks to the care and administration of a team of people based at Abbey Gisburne Park Hospital, I am an alcoholic who thoroughly enjoys life without a drink.
I was treated with courtesy and kindness. I was encouraged to share my experiences with the other patients and found that I was far from alone with this debilitating problem.
The food was superb, the grounds simply breathtaking.
I started to rebuild my life. The team helped me to rebuild my self esteem and assertiveness – it was hard work but I wanted to stop drinking so much it was worth it all.
I had a lot of good times at Gisburn, I laughed and I cried and have made a lot of everlasting friendships.
I would like to thank Abbey Gisburne Park for giving me a second chance to start again.
This is an easy letter to write, but still it is amazing I am even able to write it at all. I arrived at the hospital not knowing how, why, where or when, I was a shattered man being pushed around in a wheelchair, beaten by drink.
I am back at work, sitting in front of a computer screen, enjoying life without drink. I am re-focused with a new determination to be someone my family can be proud of.

My 32 year old daughter is a recovering alcoholic. Today she is well, confident, active and hopeful. She attends the after care meetings at CDC and I attend the Family Support Meetings. We receive friendship and care.

I was stretched to the end of my endurance with anguish and distress and I could see the fragmentation of our close family. I couldn’t believe this was happening when we all loved each other so much.
My family member’s life was falling apart – alcohol related injuries, loss of driving licence, missed days from work and loneliness.
At the CDC my daughter was given kind, but firm, help and understanding. She started to learn about the nature of her addiction to alcohol and the need to make changes in her life.
